Scope and content

Highland Park has a diversity of churches and synagogues, representing multiple denominations. From the first, a Catholic Church a cabin of oak logs erected by early settlers in 1846 to the Christian Science Church built in 1904 (the building was sold to the City in 1984), this collection comprises documents, service programs, photographs, newspaper articles and other materials pertinent to the Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, and other Christian churches and materials pertinent to several Jewish synagogues serving the community.

The collection is organized by denomination and church: Catholic, affiliated cemeteries ; Jewish, Evangelical, Christian, Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, Presbyterian and Baptist.

Files 1-9. Catholic: Immaculate Conception Church (Catholic) Several photographs of the St Mary’s Church, the first Catholic church in Highland Park, later renamed Immaculate Conception, a cabin of oak logs erected by early settlers in 1846. Biographical info of Father Marquette and a brief history of St. Mary‘s of the Woods. Letter from Pearl Stupey Courson (1969), clippings. The folders contain the Historical Sketch booklet for the 50th anniversary (1921), postcard (ca.1920), service program and Mission Study for the 100th anniversary (1971), Pictorial Directory (1988), Church Directory (1952, 1963, 1967, 1976), 2 booklets titled Presbyterian Homes – Our History from 1904 (ca. 1999), clippings, newsletter (Oct 1978). Also included are minutes of a congregational meeting held on Feb, 1918, and correspondence (1923), services program (1912, 1986, 1996, 1999), including the service of installation of the Reverend J. William Giles (1970), a manual of the Presbyterian Church (1914), issue of The North Shore Review (1927), Annual Report (1975, 1977), The Highland Park Presbyterian Church – A History 1871-1996 by Bruce L.
