Biographical history
Amateur photographer Chaplain George D. Rice was born in Brighton, Massachusetts, on January 23rd, 1861, married on February 25th, 1883 to Elizabeth Fells, with no children, and educated at Tufts College. He was a chaplain of the 6th Massachusetts Volunteers in the Spanish-American War in 1898, and was appointed a first lieutenant in the 26th Regiment, United States Volunteers, organized to serve in the Philippine Islands, July 5th, 1899. He served the 27th Infantry Regiment, one of the ten new Regular Army regiments authorized for the Philippine-American War, organized on February 2, 1901. Chaplain Rice served at the battle of Bayan (May 2, 1902) ministering to the sick and wounded. He documented the assault on the cotta of the Sultan of Bacolod on April 6, 1903, known as the Battle of Bacolod, Philippines, with his Kodak Brownie camera, and turned it into a souvenir booklet for sale at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.
Rice was cited for heroism in the Spanish-American War.

The collection is comprised of 470 lantern slides positives, chiefly in black and white. The slides range in date from the late 1890’s to the mid-1910’s. The largest series (93 slides) are illustrated biblical passages of the Old Testament. The collection also comprises images of the Spanish-American War, the U.S. Navy, the Wreck of the Maine in Havana, Cuba (1898), the Battle of Bacolod (1902), and the Second Boer War (1899-1902). Included in the slides are images of China, Alaska, Cuba, Philippines, and several unidentified locations and portraits.

The slides are arranged by series. Original series titles have been retained: Boer Wars, Crusaders, Ben Hur, Christian Hymns, Pilgrim’s Progress, US Navy, Wreck of the Maine, Mining Trade, Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, Spanish-American War.
Box 1
It contains 60 slides: images of the Second Boer War (29) which include battlefield scenes, landscape and photographs of native persons, Columbian Exposition (1), and miscellaneous (30).

It contains 52 slides: Crusades (8), theatrical scenes of Ben Hur (7), Christian Hymns (12), theatrical scenes of the Pilgrim’s Progress (5), Political Cartoons (2), and portraits (18).
Box 3:
It contains 75 slides: photographs of China (45) and theatrical scenes of the Old Testament (30).
Box :
It contains 77 slides with passages and theatrical scenes of the Old Testament.
Box 5:
It contains 64 slides: Spanish-American War (56), Henry Morton Stanley and the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, one of the last European expeditions into the interior of Africa in the 19th Century (1886-1889) - (8 slides).

It contains 68 slides: US Navy (35), Wreck of the Maine (13), Mining Trade (13), Niagara Falls (7).
