Biographical history

Painter-sculptor James Cady Ewell was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 28, 1889. Ewell lived and worked in Highland Park, Illinois for many years and designed the City's World War I memorial. An exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute in 1919 displayed his pen and ink drawings.

Ewell owned Ewell and Thurber Associates, providing the logo designs for companies such as Wilson sporting equipment.

Ewell married Hazel Crow and they raised 2 children in Illinois.

In later years, Ewell founded Ringwell farms where he bred shorthorn cattle in Ringwood, Illinois on the Wisconsin border. He died in Florida in 1963.

This collection visually documents 1926 granite War Memorial, in Memorial Park, Highland Park, Illinois designed and installed by James Cady Ewell. Photo negatives show the creation of the sculpture in studio and the final installation.

The collection also includes family history excerpts from Ewell's and Crafts Dudley Watson's biographies and a sound disc of a talk by Watson rerecorded by Watson (and Cady Ewell's) grandson.

Watson also lived and worked in Highland Park, Illinois and was the maternal grandfather of the donor.
