The Brand family immigrated to the United States from Alsace. Philip Brand (b. 1813) arrived in 1837 to the Highland Park area (Deerfield/Northfield). He married Mary Salome Ott, also an emigrant from Alscace. They had 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls. The 5 boys of the family created the Brand Brothers Paint Company. Two brothers became artists of repute in Highland Park. William Enoch Brand was an artist. He worked with his siblings and his own projects. Orson Brand, the youngest son, was a photographer of great significance to the Highland Park area. His work documented Highland Park has images from its earliest conception. His daughter, Salome Brand Roeber, was a member of the first Highland Park Historical Society in 1934; and the re-birthed Highland Park Historical Society chartered in 1966.
